Sharon,
I don't know where to begin to thank you for all that you have done for our family. We truly appreciate you doing
the leg work so that we were able to get the AED for our home. Just having it now makes us feel more at ease.
You are a specail person and what you are doing to help others is truly an "awesome" thing!
Thank you also for the shirts, cookbook, candy, etc. Thank also your mom for the lovely afghan she gave Hannah.
that was so thoughtful of her. Keep in touch with us. We look forward to volunteering next year at your Cardiac
Screening (KSU).
God Bless You & Thanks!

Ms. Bates – Gary and Diana H. are very good friends of ours and I understand they have talked to
you about a family medical crises that faced our family in June of this year.
A little background – On June 2, 2011, we found our oldest daughter, Hannah, unresponsive in her
bedroom. After calling 911, starting CPR, and two EMTs that live in our town being able to utilize a defibrillator that
we are fortunate that she is with us today. After a two day stay in our local hospital and another cardiac occurrence,
she was air lifted to KU Med Center in KC, Missouri. After further testing, she’s been diagnosed with Long QT
Syndrome and the proud owner of a pacemaker/defibrillator and doing very well, attending Kansas State University and majoring
in Secondary Education.
In the meantime, my husband (Steve) has been diagnosed with Long QT and he’s the proud owner of a
pacemaker/defibrillator as of August 3, 2011.
We also have one other daughter (Katie) that is also being tested for Long QT and her doctor is treating
her with a beta blocker and continues seeing her and testing her. The testing so far shows that she is boarder line
Long QT. Due to Katie being only 11, the doctor said she is still growing and complications can arise with implanting
a device at this time.
Therefore, Katie’s doctor has ordered the beta blocker and that our family obtain a Portable AED
for our home.
Gary and Diana H. said they have talked to you about our issues and the need to purchase a Portable AED.
Katie’s doctor has submitted a request to insurance for us but her doctor indicated that they have not paid for others
in the past and probably won’t this time. As the Portable AEDs are a rather expensive item, I understand that
you can help us in the purchase of one for around $900-$1000. If this is possible, please let me know what we need to
do on our end to get this purchase accomplished.
I truly thank you for all your help and assistance regarding this medical equipment issue!!!! This
has been a very mental and physical draining summer but I must say that the man upstairs was looking out for us and we now
know that this disorder is within our family and can deal with it and hopefully avoid another situation like on June 2.

Dear Sharon,
My name is Brenda
E. and my family and I live in Manhattan, KS. I am so sorry for the loss of your son! It truly breaks my heart!
I'm in deep gratitude for what you have done with your Anthony Bates Foundation!
Our son, Seth, is
15 years old and soon to be 16. I just wanted to say thank you for purchasing the AED's at the high school! We
so much appreciate that! Our son has to have access to one everywhere he goes. We just returned from Mayo Clinic
in Rochester, MN where he was diagnosed with CPVT (a heart disorder that causes sudden unexplained death syndrome).
Praise God it was found and he is now being treated with medications and had his first surgical procedure, August 8.
Thank you! If
we don't have to be back at Mayo, I'm hoping to volunteer at your heart screening here in Manhattan on September 12.
I would love to help spread the word about this vital testing as despite Seth being born with a VSD this recent news came
as a huge shock! He was on varsity football as a high school sophomore and also wrestled and the doctors said he wouldn't
have lived through the year if he continued in sports.
Thank you so much!
Brenda E.

Hi Sharon!
I have so much to catch up with you about personally,
but want you to know that I've already signed up to work online. I do look forward
to seeing you!
The 18 yr old daughter of our best friends life was
saved this past June 2 due to an AED. God and several angels were watching over
her that morning. Unbeknownst to them, she has a genetic heart disorder called
long QT syndrome. Hannah's dad works with Gary for KDOT. The rains came and the guys were called out to close flooded roads at 4:30 AM. As her dad past her room he heard her gag/gasp and saw her shadow in a weird spasm/seizure. He tried to shake, slap, whatever to get her out of it. Then
she went limp and he started CPR. Her mom called 911 and the volunteer first
responders were there in minutes. By the time Gary got there (not knowing, just
to pick Steve, the dad, up) at 4:50 their yard was packed with help. They had
to zap her 4 times before they could get her stabilized to transport her to the hospital.
Doctors took a couple of days to figure out whether the seizure caused the heart to stop or the other way around. She was sent to KU Med and a pacemaker-defibrillator was eventually implanted. She is doing great and will become a Wildcat this fall! Her dad also has now had a device put in and her younger sister, age 11, is being medicated and monitored--both
for the same thing. The family is looking to buy a portable defibrillator to
have with them for the little sister all the time. Oh, and that flooded road? Not flooded by the time the workers got to it...
I still get goose bumps when I get to that part. Angels were watching,
for sure. (Of course you probably know that the cops were all over their house
trying to determine drugs, suicide, etc., etc., etc.)
Anyway, I think I have a family of recruits to help. If Hannah would have had your tests, likely her condition would have been found. Yes, I'd told them several times about your screenings, but they didn't get that it
was different from a regular physical. Do you need a voice with a face to promote
your LIFESAVING screenings?
I hope YOU are doing well. I look forward to seeing you and helping Sept. 11!
Diana

I spoke to you a few few months back when my son attended one of the heart screenings here in Glendale. While
at the screening they found Kandon had a heart flutter.
He went in a couple weeks after the screening and had it taken care of. It was a day in the
hospital and a couple days of resting and now he is doing wonderful. He is at NAU
attending summer ball. He is feeling so much better. No more passing out and is feeling
back to normal. I just wanted to thank you again for what you do. If it wasn't for the
screening im not sure how long it would have been before we got to the bottom
of all this.

The only way to build awareness is to let people know you are on a crusade to save lives. This
is an educational article with the purpose of screening kids so that families do not ever have to experience what we have
had to endure. It never gets easier but thank you for making people realize how important it is have your kids hearts screened.
Thank you!
....
I love you guys, too! I am sitting here with tears rolling down my cheeks
because we are all trying so hard so others do not live the daily heartache we live and it so hard, day after day. This year
we will finally make the progress we have been trying to do for ten years! I know we will because we have each other and the
memories of our kids to make it happen!

Sharon, You don't have to reply, but I simply wanted to say, "thank you". The hard
work you are advancing on behalf of SCA is not without admiration and appreciation, and knowing we are still heart stricken
with our losses. The recent and sad situation in Michigan just adds to our determination to continue to advocate this cause.
I'm also glad to read your article from Kansas State, and the quote / support from Coach Bill Synder. Our two years is coming
up in a couple of months, and it is still devastating....slowly we'll continue to assist in SCA for as you know, there is
no better cause that our sons would want us to support. Peace, Brian

Thank You!
I thought of our conversation
and how we just knew how that boy died in MI, then I saw you on the news.
I know words will never bring
your son back, but I just want you to know that God always has a bigger plan. Think
of all the young lives Anthony has saved. Every time we hear of another child who loses their life we are reminded of how
important your and Anthony's work is.
I just wanted say Thank you
and I will see you in a couple of weeks.

I just wanted to thank you for having
this service. I took my son to get the screen almost 2 years ago. In light of the recent tragedy of the Michigan teen, it
is so important to screen for this unseen issue. It was such an easy thing to do and gives me peace of mind in knowing that
tragedy will not befall my son. Thank you again for your work. It matters to so many of us.

Dear Sharon,
My
husband and I want to thank you for making it possible for our son, Andrew, to receive a cardiac screening at Missouri Western
State University. He was diagnosed with WPW because of this screening. He has been playing a variety of
sports intensely for years, every year having a sports physical, never having any symptoms. We feel so fortunate he choose MWSU!! He had the procedure done and
is now back to playing baseball at MWSU. What wonderful work you are doing!! You are an amazing person. I have
told so many people how Andrew's condition was diagnosed and they are just amazed by your story. We are so sorry for
the loss of your son. There are not enough words to tell you how we appreciate what you are doing, every day I thank
God that you came into our lives.
Many Thanks,
Tom, Hilary, Andrew and Morgan

We are grateful
for the foundation which discovered our grandson's heart problem. Thank you!
Dear Sharon,
I really did not expect such a quick reply! Thank you -again-for starting the Foundation.
(Our Grandson) is doing well. His parents returned to Napa, CA yesterday and said he will need to wait two weeks
to have an evaluation of the success of the surgery before he can return to his baseball practice and other physical activities. We feel certain he will be fine when the doctors give him the needed tests. He was
so fortunate to have chosen MWSU as he would never had had the test otherwise that caught his abnormality.
After so many years playing football, baseball
and basketball we can't help but thank God that he has survived. Many prayers
and the generousity of people, including you are what have brought this about.
Sincerely,
Angela and Tom P. (Grandma and Grandpa)

Dear Sharon, I
wanted to thank you for all that you and the Anthony Bates Foundation does. I
started having heart problems in high school and it wasn't until I went to a heart screening you hosted at Kansas State University
in the Fall of 2009, that I learned I had a heart condition called Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome.
I first went to my doctor about my heart problems and
symptoms at the end of my freshman year of high school. At the end of the doctors visit, they performed an EKG and found nothing
wrong with me. They just wrote it off as a side effect of me having an unusually fast metabolism and being naturally underweight
for my height. They told me to eat more and left it at that. For several years I had to fight the tachycardia attacks and
adjust my everyday life around what would trigger them easily and what would help control them because I could not find someone
who believed that I was having these problems and actually try to figure out what was wrong with me. It wasn't until you showed
up at our Marching Band rehearsal my sophomore year of college that I had any hope of finding out information to help me.
I set up an appointment and went in to get my Echo and EKG done. They actually had to do 3 EKG tests because the readings
were coming out so abnormal. The staff though was very patient and kind in taking the time to help me and get the best reading
possible to be sent in and evaluated. I was told I would be mailed within the
next several weeks my results and that they would also be sent to my doctor. Imagine my surprise when I received a call from
you to talk to me about my test results! I expected a letter or something via mail telling me the results, but the fact that
you took time out of your busy day to call and explain the condition to me really shows how much you and everyone at the foundation
cares about others. Within the next week or two, I had an appointment with one of the top Cardiologists in Topeka, KS. Since
then my doctors have worked out a course of action that best suits me and I have regular check-ups to evaluate my condition
and help prevent anything worse that can happen when dealing with WPW.
I sincerely thank you for all that you have and will
do for kids all around the nation. If if weren't for the heart screening you provided, I would still be battling these heart
problems. The Anthony Bates Foundation saved my life and for that I will be eternally thankful. God Bless and I wish you and
everyone at the foundation the best.

I have helped with the free heart screening in
Manhattan a couple of times. I am really excited about being able to help
all day this year. Living with HCM is a difficult thing but I am very blessed that I am doing just that - LIVING.
I was not diagnosed until I was out of high school. Thankfully, I never got into sports when I was younger.
I am not sure if I would have made it if I had. I have an ICD, called "my little helper", and I have had
the ablation done. I have a lot of good days but still have some bad ones. I am very thankful to
have met Sharon (Bates) and to have given my time for the (Anthony Bates) foundation.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - Finger Lakes Times, Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009
Cardiac screening may have saved local teen's life
To the Editor:
We want to express our greatest gratitude to the Anthony Bates Foundation, Finger Lakes Health,
local sponsors and all the volunteers involved with the free cardiac screening offered to area school
districts at the Geneva Community Center
Sept. 12.
We were fortunate enough to have a family member so adamant about the importance of this
screening. We decided to bring our children, which turned out to be a life-changing decision.
Never in our wildest dreams would we have believed our son would have been diagnosed with
Wolfe-Parkinson-White syndrome.
The medical staff involved responded quickly and professionally, which led to a life-saving surgery
less than a week later.
Fortunately, our son is on the road to a complete recovery and will have full involvement in his
senior year activities.
If this or any other free screening is offered again, we highly recommend that all parents and school
districts take full advantage of the opportunity.
Lastly, we would like to thank all our family, friends and community members for all your
support. It was greatly appreciated.

Hi Sharon,
I want to thank you for doing this for our athletes. Your loss is tremendous….
One that I cannot begin to imagine.
So, from the deepest part of every mother…... Thank you
for making a
difference for our sons and daughters!!!!
I decided to send the information to my son’s competitive
soccer league.
The league consist of boys
and girls from many age levels. I asked
management to seriously consider passing the information to the
parents.
You are a wonderful Mom!!

Hi, I’m just calling for Sharon. My name is Cindy
and I just wanted to thank you. My daughter had
a screening at the BGHS screening. She
had the Echo & EKG tests. Actually she had an abnormal EKG.
She didn’t have Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.
She had something else. We didn’t have any idea. She
didn’t have a lot of symptoms.
She is seeing a pediatric cardiologist. She is 14 and having other testing
done and she may need a pace maker it look likes. I just wanted to THANK YOU. I am very happy we
went there and we found this out now!

Dear Sharon;
I would like to thank you for holding the screening in Manhattan on Sunday the
28th. I took my son
to it and they found that he has a Bicuspid Aortic Valve that is leaking.
If we had not gone to
this we may have known that he had it until he was much
older. Thanks so much for what
you are doing for our Athletes.
Thanks Jerry D.

Sharon,
First of all... thanks very much for this service you provide
for the youth in the area. What a great way
to honor Anthony and continue to give such meaning and significance to his
life. Hopefully our
donations are helpful, though I know this is mainly run on your compassion.
While the screening is
obviously for the kids, as a mom I feel like it was a gift to me too. There
are always plenty of things to
worry about, but this is one less thing to think of as my kids are out there on
the field and court.
So thanks for that!!!!
It has to make you feel good to know that you have impacted at
least 50 people and their families just over
one weekend. I'm sure the early detection of various problems could
very likely change the courses of
their lives.
Thanks again for everything you do.
Debbie S.

Dear Sharon,
I wanted to write and thank you for your hard work and dedication toward educating
parents of this
potential killer. My husband's only brother died in 1982 the same way your son
did. At that time the
doctors really couldn't give his family much information, let alone answers, therefore for
over twenty
years all we've had was "hope" that this won't suddenly happen to our children.
Thanks to your
organization now we have the knowledge to be proactive in helping protect our daughters.
Tomorrow
we are taking our oldest (almost 14) to get her baseline echo, among other tests,
and are grateful for
the information and encouragement you have provided.
Please put me on your mailing list. I am interested in helping out with events
you may sponsor in
Southern California.
Thanks again!

Kendra, Phoenix, AZ, August, 2004
Ladies & Gentlemen:
Please accept this small donation as a token of my gratitude for the services you are providing
our community.
I have been very concerned about my son participating in tackle football due to the press coverage
of the occassional heart-related deaths of apparently "healthy" young men who have passed their
sports physicals and yet die on the field or the court! Although I mentioned this to both my son's
physician and also my ex-husband I felt that my concerns were dismissed by both of them as
"overprotective" and "paranoid". When a friend told me about hearing your advertisement on
the radio for the free heart screenings at Mountain Pointe High School I decided to take
my son for my own peace of mind because I would never forgive myself if I didn't do it
and later something bad happened. Thankfully he is fine and the report was forwarded to his
physician for inclusion in his medical record and to establish a baseline.
I was so impressed by the service you provided that I called my son's father and insisted
that he also come down because he has high blood pressure, which he has refused to take
seriously, in my opinion. They actually identified a concern with his heart and recommended he
see his family physician wihch he did the following Monday. Based upon the results that your
team provided, the physician did a comprehensive physical evaluation, changed his
blood pressure medication and provided written and verbal nutritional counseling that
I think has "finally gotten through" to him.
Thanks to your Foundation I hope to see improvements in my ex-husband's overall health status
and we both know that our son is starting his athletic career with no "hidden" time bomb in his chest.
Sincerely,
Kendra

Senia, age 27, Oklahoma City, OK
"My name is Senia, age 27, and I was a volunteer at Mountain Pointe High School, Phoenix, Arizona,
on May 18, 2002, when athletes were screened for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. I live in Oklahoma City
and was visiting my aunt and uncle in Scottsdale who were volunteering so I went along and
helped screen the female athletes. The opportunity arose for me to receive the screening and I took
advantage of it, not anticipating that anything significant would be found wrong with my heart!
I was greatly
surprised to learn that one of my heart's valves was not closing properly, thereby allowing
blood to backwash out of my heart. This was confirmed by a full resting echocardiogram
administered by my physician in Oklahoma City. From the echocardiogram they determined that
I have an even more serious condition than first thought. Instead of the valve not closing
properly I have what is called a torn chordea. My doctor is watching this to see if any more
of the chordea breaks loose and if it does I will have to have a valve replaced. He has given me
some warning signs to look for so that I can take immediate action. To monitor this condition I
now have an echocardiogram once a month. If I had not had this screening I might have had
a fatal heart attack as I had no prior knowledge that I had a problem. To Sharon and
Allen Bates I wish to say a most sincere, "thank you." This screening may have saved my life."

Greetings Dearest Sharon,
Our family wants you to know we appreciate the screening at Mountain Pointe High School
months ago (May, 2002).
You were instrumental in that venture. They discovered something in Kathryns heart test that day.
We did an immediate follow-up with my cardiologist and Kathryns pediatrician.
Kathryn is our 2nd daughter, now
a senior at Desert Vista H.School.
It is not life threatening yet the doctors said it is great to know about it for
the future.
Leah(20) and Jimmie(15) were tested with no irregularities....Good to know that too!
THANK YOU SHARON
BATES.....ANTHONY IS LOOKING DOWN AND BEAMING WITH
PRIDE AT WHAT HIS MOM IS DOING FOR SO MANY PEOPLE. His tragic passing has
evolved into a Godsend through YOU! He and You have given us knowledge for Kathryns sake.
Your efforts will undoubtedly uncover things that will help so many people and they may never
know you or Anthony............but we do and God bless you both.
With Love,
Curtis, Lillian, Leah, Kathryn
